I'm a builder and IMO what you have done is perfectly correct. If you are wanting the top edge of the roof to stop at the flat top, that will create a problem with your dormers. If you lower the roof top edge, the dormer roof will appear to peek over the flat roof.
Are these dormers needed? If, yes, then this is the best way to go. If they are not needed, delete the ones on that side roof at the flat top and replace them with nonworking dormers from GT (Windenburg). These can be placed more freely and will allow you to lower the top edge to better align with the flat roof.
I think how it looks now is great and very similar to the picture. You should be proud of your work.
yep, that is the exact issue i am having.
they aren't needed as living space, but they are needed to make the build not look so plain. i am going to try the deco dormers once i get back to it, but if they don't mesh well (and i don't have high hopes for them) then i'll start looking for another house.
