Chestnut Ridge is not in the American Southwest
It gets cold and snows. So where is this supposed to be, more like the plains? Colorado?

North American deserts (including the southwest) can get snow, it just depends on what altitude they're sitting at. All of the high altitude regions (and some of the mid to lower altitude regions too) all get snow in the winter.
