No I think you can just register your sim as, say, a self-employed restaurant owner / painter / fiction writer / etc. But they will still have to own and run their restaurant, paint, or write novels to actually make any money from it.

See, one of my (and others') biggest pet peeves was that my amazingly talented restaurant owners would say they're "unemployed" when being asked about their jobs. But now .. NOW they will finally say "best chef in town" instead.

It also means you can decide to make your own little office space, call yourself a "writer", "architect", "painter" or whatever without actually having to be in the associated careers (if they exist). Which, let's face it, is great thing for all of us wanting to play without the little goals every once in a while.
