I'm sorry for your loss! It is a silly way for a sim to die. I understand the dilemma - had the exact thing happen in one of my saves. Husband died of toddler cuteness overload in a beautifully decorated room :/ I sat there wondering what to do... and decided I wasn't too attached to him, so go with it :D
