As you climb the road to fame, you can get perks and quirks that change the way your famous sim functions. Some notable quirks I love include Stans, which are basically stalkers, and Vain Street, which makes your sim want to check themselves out in the mirror every so often.
If I compare it with what I can read on Superstar, you only get access to the Acting career in GF. Karaoke is introduced in TS4 via City Living, the Photography sets are in both GTW and expanded on in the Moschino SP, and the spa items are in Spa Day.

Unless I'm reading your response incorrectly, it sounds like Get Famous is a bit bare bones without supporting expansions like GTW, City Living and Spa Day?

In TSO, your Sim had to have Charisma or Creativity and you could be an actor, singer or model. You paraded around the equivalent of Hollywood and rose through the rank of famous people. It had Spas, Coffee Shops etc.

Yeah, Cats & Dogs gives you Brindleton Bay and the Veterinarian career. Works somewhat like Dine Out's system for Restaurants where you can pretty much be your own boss. Brindleton Bay is quite nice for extra space if you play multiple households, and yeah, comes with NPCs too. Much better usage for this place than GTW's Magnolia Promenade.

And yeah, the mystery resets for every sim and progress is saved by the sim going in it. All EPs ship with a world except for Seasons, some GPs have worlds as well. The only ones that don't ship with a world are Stuff Packs, since they are, of course, stuff packs. Unless there's a World stuff pack somewhere in the future, then this statement is null and void LOL

Yes, Jungle Adventure resets. :) I wanna say World Adventures had more interesting puzzles from what I can remember, but I did really enjoy authenticating more than robbing tombs--A rather unusual like in my case since I tend to go for the former LOL

GF can stand alone, but supporting expansions work pretty well with it as all Sims expansions tend to be.
Del Sol Valley, the world shipped with GF, is basically like LA with sims trying to make it big on the silver screen or otherwise. The Fame system isn't locked to acting, but to rather anything a sim can do, so sims can get famous for literally anything (or they can opt out of it altogether). You can't necessarily become a singer or model unfortunately, but it's definitely achievable becoming famous from high singing skills and whatnot. There's self-employment that you can basically play out for the title if you'd like too. It's fairly versatile for fame, and also offers a separated reputation meter that modifies how other sims approach yours. If you've got a terrible reputation, everyone tends to hate you from the start and vice versa.

Honestly if you did not enjoy sims 3 I think you may not enjoy 4. Expansion and game packs contained a bit more each time in sims 3

When I first started, I only had the base game plus City Living, and I was perfectly happy with that for awhile. I really enjoyed the high rise environment.

I might have to get C&D too then ? I like the sound of the Veterinarian Career. Is it run like a business?

What was lacking for you on Magnolia Promenade?

GF sounds like a mix of Superstar and TS3 version. I like the sound of it!

You've mentioned Strangerville & Jungle Adventure resetting for each Sim and progress is saved by a Sim going in...I would plan on running all playable Sims & Worlds through one save (!!!), would that still allow quests, adventures and mysteries to reset each Sim visit?

Also, I take it that Strangerville is not a playable town?

@Ashuray - what makes you say that? TS3 was disappointing for me due to forced neighbourhood-wide Story Progression and Aging, plus a few of the gameplay elements like Rabbit Holes. I understand that SP and Aging are now in-game options that can be turned off and Rabbit Holes no longer exist?

Oh, you can live in all of the worlds aside from vacation worlds, which are Granite Falls (OR) and Selvadorada (JA).

Yeah, it's basically run like a business! I read that you were also considering Dine Out and GTW's retail system--I prefer the former, since the retail system for me is somewhat hectic. The most stressful bakery I ever ran... I don't even want to think about it LOL. I loved running a restaurant, though. Dine Out gives you enough of a challenge to get it to a five-star establishment.

For me, Magnolia Promenade felt unfinished since the area itself is very large but with only 4 usable lots for a whole expansion pack. I was honestly mad when I saw it the first time LOL

And yes, you can definitely do that. I've done that with my main adventuring household :)

I couldn't imagine playing without Windenburg it's so beautiful and it comes with Get Together and the club system lets you make all kinds of groups , like family , friends , kids , painting , gardening ,the choice is only limited by your imagination.
Also City Living is lots of fun with festivals and apartment life. It's hard to imagine playing without any of the packs because I don't know if I could do without the active careers either. My least used pack is the get famous one since the town itself is so small , all my famous sims live elsewhere and if my sim isn't in the fame business ?? It does have some nice features though. Island living seems like more of a game pack than an EP. And since you've played sims you know what seasons adds to the game.

Other than the skyscrapers, some things I got a lot of use out of that came with the pack were:

basketball courts
food stalls
Karaoke clubs and the singing skill
different lot traits
collecting snow globes
the plazas (or the hubs of each section of lots that you can walk around in)
various festivals

There are a lot of other things that come with it, but those are the main things that I personally enjoyed the most.

We have toddlers, now, so if you're in any way a family-oriented player, you're going to want Parenthood. This allows you to help direct your little Simmies in the way they should go. There is a Values system that the parents can teach their children to have starting with the toddler. The earlier, the better. Sims can set the table which helps to make the family sit together for a meal. It also helps them to gain manners.

If you're interested in stardom, I am really loving Get Famous. I think the celebrity system beats the one in Sims 3. Not everyone is a celebrity, and although there is supposed to be a way for your would be star to get a boost from knowing a celebrity, I haven't found it. LOL My Sim has worked his fanny off to get where he is.

If you don't mind having mods in your game I recommend MC Command Center, which allows you to set things to simulate story progression, plus a number of assets.

City Living also gives your Sim an actual singing skill.

Heck there is a sale on - so grab an extra pack or two lol
