This is how I imagine it happened:
Jacques took his wife on their yact and steered it in the middle of the lake. His wife was terrified since she couldn't swim but Jacques reassured she would be fine. When she reached for her husband, Jacques pushed her with all his might and she fell into the water. Before she sank into the depths, a creature unlike anything Jacques had ever seen, emerged from the water and swallowed his wife whole. Since then, Jacques' mental health has been unraveling, afraid of the Monster of the Deep.
