Do skills make any difference in Strangerville?

Just been puttering in Strangerville a bit the last two days and wondering if a sims' skills and abilities are even relevant or if this is more like a traditional role-playing game where you just have to click on everything and ask the right questions to the right people? In the regular Sims of course the higher your skills the better your chances of unlocking things but so far I haven't found anything where skills would play much of a part. Also, why is there only ONE available home to move into and ONE vacant lot where you can build? I realize the sims is getting tighter and tighter but then maybe they don't expect people to actually want to make this neighborhood a real living hood...it is just kind of strange

  • My female Sim is a Global Superstar and she had a lot of maxed out traits. That helped a lot when I needed to have a good friendship level to acquire things from scientists and military. That "bestie" greeting she has really helped.
  • I had two available homes for my new Sim to move into and two lots she could build on. Slip 42 in the trailer park and Carpophagous Corner are both affordable as starter homes and they are both in StrangerVille Plaza. Cliff Side Crest and Creek Corner Cove are the vacant lots and they are both in Shady Acres.

I've already noticed that Programming level 3 is needed for some actions, so I would agree with the others that skills and abilities are relevant.

all programming 3 really does is let you get a few extra bits of evidence while at the secret lab when you're on that step. it also breaks the computers it's used on, which then require handiness 9 to fix

so not really required, just helps collect the needed evidence slightly faster

Exactly! I completed the story with a new sim with no skills and no cheats in 3 hours. Some buyable traits and skills may help you complete the story faster but it does not affect anything within the story. It will play out the same for everyone irrespective of what trait/skills you have.

  • OK, I am wondering how they expect people to use the Chemical Analyzer IF you don't own "Get to Work"? Isn't that the pack that came with the Science career and that object? Or did they also stick that one item in Strangerville also? Not spoilering anything but you need that thing to complete the mystery. Now I'm looking thru my Buy menu trying to find that thing. Either I'm blind or I need to use the cheat to reveal that? As for the lots, I realized after I posted that that you could easily bulldoze all those homes or move the families out. Not sure why I forgot about that.
  • The chemical analysers from StrangerVille and Get To Work look like different objects to me, but I'm not sure.

These are the things you can do with certain skills, traits, and careers that I've found out so far:
    Spoiler
    - Level 3 Programming: Hack the lab computers for more evidence. Level 9 required to fix them afterwards.
    - Level 5 Fitness: Impress military personnel enough to get the infection scanner.
    - Charisma (unsure about level): Seduce military personnel into giving you the scanner.
    - Level 5 Military career: Order military personnel to give you the scanner.
    - Any trait that helps building relationships faster: Befriend a scientist to get them to complete your hazmat suit.

However, as others have said, none of this is actually necessary, there are several ways of gathering evidence and items needed for progression. If all else fails, and you have some money left, you can still bribe your way to some of the objects and buy others at the shop. I do think you have to befriend a scientist to get one of the components of the hazmat suit, but then again, you can always do this without any specific skills or traits, and I'm not sure the hazmat suit is even required at all. It may help
    Spoiler
slowing down the infection rate in the boss fight against the Mother,
but I managed to complete that part of the story without the suit.

Same! I used that a lot. My Sim didn't start off with great Logic in this story, but by the end of it, he had nearly maxed it out. Much more fun approach than playing chess for hours. ^_^

There are a few skills mentioned above that come in handy, but I think any Sim can make their way through it without too much frustration or drama. (Unless they have the Emotion Bomb quirk, but in that case, everything is drama.)
  • The chemical analyzers from GTW & SV *are* different. The one in GTW lets you analyze collections & flora/fauna but not make the vaccine for strangerville. The SV analyser only lets you make the vaccines, nothing else. Tested this out by buying the GTW analyser for my home lot to see if I could make vaccine.

You're supposed to go to the secret lab to use the analyzers. You'll see them in the basement after you use the keycard.

Haha, I tried the same thing. :p
