One of the most alarming things for me when this game first came out was how quickly all of my played Sims got rather ... large. I mean, no matter what they did all of my sims gained a lot of weight...

I model the public gyms in my game after those, so they include all of the expected "spa" like activities available in the game as well as workout equipment (Yoga, meditation, masseuse). They also have basketball courts, an indoor pool, steam room and for most of my gyms a bar and small kitchen area. Some also have a internet cafe on one of the levels.
...basically, when my Sims go 'to the gym' the whole household goes and there is definitely something for every sim in the family, not just working out.
Even entertaining the notion of going to a gym no matter what the range of activities are gives me the heebie jeebies (I think I might have the loner trait!). I get my exercise walking in the country - calling it hiking would be too grand a word.
To give a proper answer in the spirit of the thread, tho' - I use a very old script mod which hasn't been updated for years, but it still seems to work without any problems. The mod simply disables the mechanic altogether.
This doesn't mean I ignore the fitness activities in the game. I like to have my game populated with all manner of sims and this includes sims who do fitness activities. These are mostly the straight forward types of activities and the default gyms in the game suit me as those sims are not played as much as my other sims (the energized moodlet doesn't help).
I do use wellness and many of the activities from spa day extensively tho'. Spa Day is one of my favorite packs and so many of my sims houses have their own sauna, hot tubs etc. Yoga, incense, the baths etc give some great buffs and sims look great wherever they do yoga - at home - out in the desert of Oasis Springs, among the flowers in country worlds and penthouse balconies in the city, etc.
