I used to create "Test Sims", or grab a random Townie as "a guinea pig". :D But I often ended up liking the Sim so kept them either as an NPC or even a semi-played.
Most of the time now to test things, I use existing sims I have. I'll make a "Test" save of course first. Or several as a I'm testing. Then when done delete those save files.
