Yes, IMO TS4 is a failure.
Why? Because after TS2 and TS3 being so massively different (TS2 Sims were detailed, challenging, & charming; TS3 sims were not because the focus in that game was more on the world and details came in things like careers and skills), I was really hoping for a combo of the two. I wanted a 'Best Of' game, combining the details that made TS2 so awesome with the cool new features of TS3 (open world, or even a semi-open world to explore; the massively improved skill systems; some sort of CASt that did not ruin TS2's brilliant genetic system; traits as a complement to TS2's personality system; and the lovely controls for adjusting age lengths, supernatural systems, weather, etc.).
Instead I got nearly none of the above. The sims don't react to their environment and circumstances like the infinitely more intelligent and more emotionally appropriate TS2 sims, no Mendellian genetics, cell phones again stuffed up everyone's butt whether I want them or not, no fears, even less traits than in TS3, no open world, no vehicles, no CASt, even more magical teleportation than in TS3, and of course the lack of toddlers, turning babies into tethered objects, and making teens indistinguishable from their elders (those latter three of course being side-effects of changing their 'vision' of the game halfway through after the SimCity 2013 debacle).
I played TS2 for nearly 9 years, only dipping into TS3 when TS4 was announced. Now I have a difficult time playing either without missing features from the other. I was so hopeful TS4 would combine the best of both games. Instead, they ditched it all for a YA-centric online-only party-fest that no one wanted nor expected, then when told to change it they did their best in the short time they were allotted by adding children and....? The midstream switch was a mistake, but who knows if it would have been worse than their original vision. Neither are games I want to play. And this new TS4 is still as full of glitches and bugs as TS3.
At least the sims look nice (not their hair). And the additions to CAS, like being able to adjust different body parts is pretty good.
...Perhaps my 'Best Of' TS2+TS3=TS5? Somehow I doubt the brand will last that long. :(
