I feel like the Sims 2 did a great job with stuff like aliens etc. Aliens were in the base game, yet everyone knew that in order to get abducted you had to have a high logic skill and then also use the telescope at night.
So if you didn't want to get abducted you could very well just avoid doing those things. It was easier to decide if your sim would get abducted or not. In the Sims 4 abductions were mostly random. I had a sim who was a photographer, had nothing to do with aliens or anything alien-related yet still got abducted one day.
I totally agree. I think that the alien abductions in the Sims 2 are a good example of occult gameplay, the same for the vampires there. No "toggles" and no random chaos. Supernatural beings were somewhat like easter eggs, and I like it that way. If you wanted some supernatural things to happen, you made your sim do certain things like using a telescope or walking the streets of Downtown at night (to meet a vampire).
I know there are many players who prefer things to work like this. I have no idea why some people insist that being a "supernatural player" necessarily means wishing supernatural chaos to happen in your game. And they also blame anyone who thinks otherwise for buying a pack that contains at least a bit of supernatural stuff... :/
