I talk to my sims a bit. When I'm creating a new one in CAS I'll pose questions to the sim on screen and sort feel for how that sim in front of me would answer and let that guide me in choosing traits and outfits. That is if the sim in question is going to be one I play a lot. If they're just background filler, then I just throw something together that looks presentable.?
Writing experts do say that it's acceptable to use "stereotypes" for minor parts.
