The uneditable houses/buildings you see in the pictures are just artwork, according to other posts I've read. It's not virtual space that could be used.
That's what they're saying, anyway. I remember how we eventually got to place lots ourselves in previous Sims games, so I can't help wondering if EA can't change this later, as they have before. :)
