In a similar way, playing toddlers doesn't significantly change the personality of the sim after they age up, but players feel more bonded to their sims and families having played through the toddler stage. This is what, in my opinion, Parenthood does for the child and teen stage. And any new traits / personality additions are icing on the cake.
I find the traits make a big difference. I had my teen grow up to YA with 3 of the 5 positive traits. Manners was one of them, she makes friends super easy now and everyone seems to like her a lot. I spent a good hour going around the city and meeting new people using the polite greeting witch gets the relationship bar 25% up (instant hugs) and talking it up with other npc sims and you know what I had a blast! I never liked talking to other sims before but this trait makes it so much easier. She went home and threw a huge party and invited all the sims she met to it.
Another trait she has is compassion. One day her teen brother came home with a bad mood swing. He was in his bed crying from it all day, the YA sim went to her brother and calmed his emotions breathing in and out (there was this weird light going from her to him) and made him super happy then they started doing a project together and he went from very sad to very happy being around his sister.
The last trait she got on age up was responsible. One time she was at work and a chance card popped up saying someone made a mistake what should she do. I choose be honest and a message popped up saying because she was responsible the chance card gave her a medium performance boost.
Even with 3 positive traits Ive found game-play to be hard. Sure she was good and had manners but when she was around sims with bad manners or slobs she didnt like it at all. She would autonomously be mean and tease or have an awkward conversation. I also found that she would always need her brother to act a cretin way around her and if he didn't she would approach him try to correct it. They have a good relationship so she was never mean to him ( at least that why i think she was never mean to him cause everyone else she didn't like she was a bit rude too) all I can say is THANK GOD they grew up the same way so when she tries to correct him he has a positive response to it. ( he has full manners )
Over all I did an experiment with the same family and grew her up with no traits and sims act differently and are treated by other sims differently. The little things ive noticed such as a sim with good manners dont like to be around sims doing bad manner stuff and always choose to do good manner stuff. But id say at least for me its made a huge difference.
