I just carefully watch the clock, then hit pause when it gets close to when I want my sims to get up, cancel their sleep action, and queue up their morning trip to the bathroom, then turn things on to normal speed. Works like a charm every time.
As for problems with the fast forwarding, my main one comes when I'm playing an apartment lot in the city and a festival starts up in the neighborhood. It slows my sleep super speed down to regular 3x speed and it drives me nuts.
