That's even worst than "popular now" ... if your idea is just about to see the people that you follow, that's means that other people will have less chances to get known on gallery, means lower downloads than now. I am always looking for new people with cool ideas and great build skills, that's why newest have to appears at first, in gallery.
The sims team made this an issue. This is so annoying. Before their change, I was faved many times and my upload received a lot of downloads. Of course faved uploads fair even better. Now, my uploads just arent being viewed. And the uploads under "newest" hardly have any attention/downloads at all. So a lot of people have been affected by it. All because of their silly mindset to make unneeded changes
Thankfully they've listened to us, and the default will be changed back to Newest in a future update. :)
