@TeeSea, one thing I do when I have events (and always have) is have my active sims travel to the lot right before it starts and select a bunch of the invited unplayed sims with the travel action. If you do it literally right before the event starts, you have a ton of your guests there as soon as it begins without having to wait.
Just a suggestion to help with that wait time in the future. It has always worked well for me.
