Horse Ranch or For Rent??? Bugginess?

Okay, I've been playing The Sims franchise since the beginning, which does color my perception of stuff somewhat. I LOVED Sims 3 - still play occasionally but dang it, TS4 building has been a big draw away from it - and I absolutely adored the Horses. Now, I do know they aren't anything like they were in TS3 but...I also love the decor. i would really like being able to build ranches and put cowboy boots on my Sims. HOWEVER, I also like the idea of For Rent. (I also enjoyed the rental options in TS4, so there's that, LOL.) The decor isn't as necessary for me (as Ranch) but the gameplay is appealing.

Then there's the price... I wonder if Horse Ranch will ever be 60% again. 50% on packs feels doable but not sure if I shouldn't just jump on Horse Ranch for the $4 difference. After all, that's practically a kit (which oddly never go on sale).

So, which one do I buy? I've not really been keeping a close eye on how EA is doing with fixing buggy packs and I'm still bitter about the Wedding pack, so where are these two on the spectrum of being fixed? I know everyone's tastes are different but I'm hoping that based on above, along with knowing if they've been fixed, perhaps you guys can help me make this decision.

  • I'd choose Horse Ranch. I'm not really into horses, but the pack is among my favorites. For Rent has a much smaller (but nice) world, and because renting units involves a certain glitchy risk, I find myself calculating rent in a spreadsheet rather than use the ingame function.

I had horses in  TS3 but they never grabbed me for real and I found them too tedious. I LOVE the horses in TS4, even if there is no ope world, it is soooo nice taking hem for a ride or to train them for contests. HR also includes nectar making + the forever sweet minigoats/sheep. They will never stop amusing you :)

  • I would go with horse ranch too, because of all the game breaking problems For Rent had, I’m afraid to download rentals. Anyone out there know if they ever fixed the white screen towns?

I like the horse ranch world better too.  They missed so many opportunities for fun things to do in the For Rent world.

  • Horse Ranch. I've had many a good hour playing with it. For Rent, is a pain in my patoot.

I really like both these packs - for VERY different reasons. I like horses and really like the part of the US the world is based on. The world is beautiful but you will be very based on your ranch and if you like farming/ranching activities, it can keep you very busy. They did a great job with the horses. But I wouldn't get it unless you really like playing with horses. I have found I can add horses to a few other worlds but they function best in Chestnut Ridge. The BB is one of the best- cohesive, beautifully done. For me it was pretty bug free. For Rent I love for it's main feature- being able to create multi -unit dwellings.  I appreciate that for two reasons. I tend to play for long periods of time in one save so I need the real estate which you can expand so much (though there's a cap of 100 new units per save) with the pack. Secondly I really appreciate  being able to depict so many more different kinds of living situations in the game. I love having trailer parks, fancy co-op buildings, small "villages" on the largest lots, and so much more. HOWEVER - For Rent - for some people - has had some serious bugs associated with it. I have experienced some save breaking ones since the patch that preceded it, that are extensively detailed on common bug reports. Its gotten better with patches but I still hear some have issues. However I can't imagine not having this pack anymore, I now consider it as essential as seasons. Just consider your own style of play.

For Rent is, in my opinion, dangerously bugged. I do not make or use any residential rental lots. I have started a brand new game and deleted every native EA residential rental lot, leaving them all blank, to avoid game breaking bugs related to hard limits on total game size. Refer to this thread for more info related to this dangerous bug:   https://answers.ea.com/t5/Bug-Reports/OPEN-Houses-Lots-disappear-Error-800-or-801/td-p/4620279

I love the furniture style that comes with the For Rent expansion, and the world is pretty to visit, so I do not wish to disable the expansion. But I never play the world lots for my sim to live in, as their home lot. I do not trust that world for anything but visiting.

Horse Ranch has become my favorite world and my primary sims live on the largest lot in that world. I also enjoy the furniture style and build mode items that come with that expansion. The game play (everything to do with horses) is wonderful and I love the mini sheep and goats. I also enjoy the CAS items.

I never found Horse Ranch to be buggy, at all, when it first came out. Since then some of the base game updates have bugged a couple things for some players, but that is not the fault of the expansion. And I think the mods I use must be fixing things in my game, because I have not had problems.

My previous favorite world, the one that came with Cottage Living, was more bugged than any of the lots in the Horse Ranch world, which is why I eventually decided to just move my sims to the world from Horse Ranch, and I have most heavily populated that world with my favorite non-played sims.  I have also renovated the recreation lots in the world.

I see no downside to Horse Ranch, but I would advise anyone who has not already purchased For Rent to avoid that expansion until the game breaking bugs have been fixed.
