how do you furnish a mansion?

A movie theater room would be cool. Also, if you have JA, you could make a museum area where you have the table to authentic artifacts and a couple shelves and cases for displaying collections, not just JA stuff. A gym is a great go to. I wish the rock climber was smaller, but if you are using the tallest walls, it might work. Home office, art studio, arcade/game room, music room. If you have lots of room, a bowling alley.

you just gotta make rooms for even the tiniest things. in the largest build I furnished they've got an entire dedicated to artsy portraits, formal and informal dining areas, huge foyer/parlor, multiple offices, HUGE deluxe bathrooms, kids playroom, and also just a lot of rather frivolous decor. you know, rich people stuff.

An indoor pool would take up a chunk of space, and you could include a hot tub area and a sauna (if you have the packs for it). A library also comes to mind for a mansion. A sitting area that's basically an indoor garden could also be quite nice.

Just think of the board game Clue. :D You've got your Conservatory (indoor garden room with fountains, etc), your Library (must have tons of bookshelves, cozy chairs and fireplace), your Ballroom (jazz it up with a DJ Booth if you have one, or go formal with a piano, etc), Billiard Room (a Game Room until we actually get pool tables), the Hall (large misc room with portraits, settees, hall closets, etc), your Study (sort of a glorified office). The Lounge is basically a Living Room, that can be huge, with little conversational nooks all about) and the formal Dining Room can contain a massive table. Your Kitchen could have a separate Pantry, with a couple fridges, and a Breakfast Nook. There should be plenty of Guest Rooms for folks who want to come and mooch off you visit, perhaps even a guest house with all the trappings. The Master Suite could have His and Hers Dressing and Bathrooms, and all bedrooms need a walk in closet of some sort. Every mansion must have a Pool House in my book, with the accompanying Spa/Fitness Room depending on the packs you have. The back garden must contain a gazebo; I have a display of beautiful insects in one of mine. For your scientific types, you can have a Laboratory--those take up tons of room. Most evil tycoon types have a whole separate wing for the kiddly winks, and their nannies, nurses, and accompanying staff. Oh, don't forget the Butler's quarters, and you may want to have a live in maid as well....I could go on....

I've yet to build a mansion in the sims 4 yet, but in the sims 3 I built a mansion and made each room color coordinated with either various shades of the color of the carpet & floor or that as well as various shades of the complementary color that went along with it. It added a bit of variety and in some cases places for people who were easily distracted (such as yours truly) to stare at for sim hours.

I've run into that issue, aside from using the decorative items here and there it sometimes good to keep some open space and also add things one might not consider a family home. Like a room specifically for parties where you quickly add sims to groups make them go to the party room and lock them in so they aren't just isolating themselves on the computer. Which I don't personally mind but for pics good when they are just in one room. A separate office for both parents in case one works outside the house and the other works at home, a lounge area on the other side of the house than the living room. Playrooms for kids or pets if you have C/D. It's the little things that fill up a mansion a little easier. :)

I feel you. I have a mansion that I've accepted I will never furnish because every time I load the lot I feel like exploding.

Make groupings of furniture. Use a sofa-back table, for instance, a side table on each end of said sofa. I have a mansion that in one corner, the baby grand piano sits. On the opposite side of that room, I have a grouping around the fireplace. Don't forget about the three-point lighting in any room. This can be table lamps and a floor lamp. I also use potted plants for atmosphere. In the dining hall, I have two long tables butted up against each other (as much as the game will allow), four chairs per side and armed dining chairs (Captain's chairs, as they're called) on each end for the host and hostess. At the far end of this room, they have a sizable bar.

The 'den' or sitting room is on the second floor. A mounted TV hangs above that fireplace, and again, the furniture is grouped around it. Along the walls behind this group are four desks for the children to do their homework. The Butler's Suite is on this floor, plus a game room for the children and another bedroom for the teen sons. On the third floor is the Master Suite and two additional bedrooms.

I like making fancy corridors and hallways for mansions. :3

I tend to look at some references for some, especially in google images or some relating to some fancy mansions in games and such.

Very rarely do I build my own mansions anymore, but when I do or if I’m just looking to fill some empty space, I create indoor pools and large workout rooms.
Depending on the Sims occupying the house, I’ll make a big, fancy office or artist’s space. An activity room with instruments, chess, etc. can be a good idea too.
