I definitely find Sims 4 to be more "grind" oriented than previous versions. I had trouble getting into the emotions hook, which feels really superficial to me. (I feel like sims themselves feel really generic -- if you don't work hard on your own to put character into them, they're all kind of the same because you're using the same tools to get them into the same emotions to get the same benefits...) I would pick it up and then put it down for a year, and then pick it up and put it back down again.
What finally got me to play it was doing challenges -- I think because having different goals let me put aside the "need" to micromanage emotions and cater to whims all the time. Now mind you, I haven't *finished* a single one of these challenges, but it gave me a new way to approach playing the game that made it more fun for me.
