Honestly, one thing that keeps me going is NEVER making the "Perfect" family anymore. This doesn't mean just using negative traits, but it means that have siblings have a negative relationship with one another.
In the Sims it's up to you to make the stories, and the same as in writing stories for novels IRL, it gets boring when the characters are all perfect. Give them flaws and weaknesses that makes their lives more interesting (daddy/mommy issues, negative trait, evil/devious outlook in life, poor, rich but is never happy, and many other ways that you can do to spice up your sims :) ).
