A happy sim family that is happy all the time can get mundane quick. Add drama, even if it hurts. It becomes entertaining and can lead you into wanting to invest more in the story.
Here are my personal tips:
1. Ensure that all sims in the household have different traits. Make them stand out from each other and give some chances to the traits you don't normally use. In my personal experience, I used to give idealistic traits and always the good, outgoing, family-oriented, romantic traits (and so on...) Using similar traits for everyone can make it boring. So make someone hot-headed, jealous, hates children (bonus if they have children or will have children). This is sure to stir some trouble automatically because it inspires conflict.
2. Have rivalry from the very beginning. Neighbors that hate each other for whatever reason you want. If you have Get Together pack, rival clubs. With Get To Work/Dine Out, have people with opposing businesses/shops/restaurants. I like to have rival club leaders become besties or form romantic relationships. Same thing with the kids of opposing families.
3. Have exciting lots around town, and go out! Being motivated to go out with your sims gives opportunity to have unplayed sims enter your story.
4. In a crowd of interacting sims, pause and observe. Especially when my sims are out having a party or tearing up the dance floor at the nightclub. You might notice some drama unfolding all by itself, you just need to look closely at different sim expressions and behaviours.
5. Force yourself to give attention to the sim(s) you're neglecting. Because maybe, a family becomes boring when you've spent all your focus getting the couple together. And once they popped out three kids, you feel stagnant and unsure of what to do. Did you spend too much time with the father's career? Is it time for the prodigal son to step away from his father's footsteps and do everything he can to leave the household for good, make a name for himself? Or shall the middle-child finally pick up that paintbrush? Did the mom have a troubled past and needs to make amends? Atonement for sins, or is she going to go back to her old ways of whatever it was she used to do prior to the marriage?
But then what? Which sim do I pay attention to? There's too many possibilities!
6. ...Cycle through. Pay attention to one sim for a while, then go to the next. You might find one sim's story more challenging or interesting, and that's perfectly OK. It's all about finding what gives you the most interest to continue on with the family, and perhaps let the sim venture forth and gasp...start a new family.
I feel like what works best when you're in a slump and don't know what to do, is to let the game do its thing. Take inspiration from there. Sometimes the autonomous actions your sims do can give you ideas. Maybe you have to give your sims a nudge, but usually, they end up doing something that can spark more drama.
Enjoy playing!
