I tend to switch back and forth. Most of the time I play vanilla, because updates and patches are so frequent and increase the chances of breaking my game or corrupting my main save. I've been playing the same save file for years, with households imported from my original save file that was heavily modded with tons of CC. I gave the CC covered Sims vanilla makeovers and put them all in my vanilla save to sort of continue their stories. Many of them have had to meet each other again, but I was just happy to have them all in the world together. The biggest headache was replacing most of the lots from the Gallery, which I'm still not finished with, lol. There's so many worlds now that it's quite the task!
I do often miss my mods, especially when I get frustrated with the AI so I go through short phases where I stick a few in there for a while but that only lasts until the next EP patch and they come out again. I still collect certain types of CC (historic, fantasy, gothy, etc.) that are hard to find, and one day I'll put them in. The CAS has become so extensive these days that I find I don't need it as much, but there are some pieces that I just adore and really miss.
