I’d love to follow this wishful thinking and agree with about everything you say. But I fear they really don’t care the game is half-baked, because it’s exactly that what triggers people into buying everything they’re adding to it. They’ve in fact found themselves a very effective strategy. So I think I follow the same line of thinking as you do (and Erpe), but with a different outcome.
I was totally ready for a successor for Sims 3 by the way. Just not this successor.
That's the thing, won't they continue to make money selling a new batch of base games and packs again anyways? The microtransaction thing won't go away just with the Sims 4, so I don't see as an excuse to extend the lifetime when Maxis can continue to sell games to another generations of Simmers by providing something new again. It is like the saying strike when the iron is hot. Our society doesn't have that long of attention spans anymore, so even five years is considered a long time for everything especially when it comes to technology. People want the newest and most graphically advanced thing out there. If Maxis won't deliver by then, someone else will produce a hot new product like with SimCity and City Skylines. Maxis should know by now they aren't immune to competition anymore. I guess time will be telling on how things will play out. It is good that Maxis is producing tangible products with their store now especially since that is the norm of a lot of companies now to sell merchandise. Whether they'll be left behind with their games we'll have to wait and see, but I don't think waiting too long will be profitable for them in the long run. Companies do have to advance and selling too old of products will just start aging them as a company. Probably why their mobile games are even advancing with newer versions now and doing really well in profits. True microtransactions are a draw, but so are fresh products so Maxis will have to determine when they think Sims 4 will be yesterday's news for their PC market. Like they said Sims 4 will be developed as long as it is feasible, so we'll see by year five if some of the Gurus are ready to move onto a new project with another iteration or with side games. Some of the Gurus have already left for other ventures. I think for them it would get boring to work on the same engine for five years and even they would like to learn more modern coding with a new engine by then and try to match some of the technological advances some other games have made with the Sims. I know with talking with others in the gaming industry dealing with old code can be a nightmare for them to update. The older the code, the harder it is to understand and update.
