How many sims can you handle at once in a household?

I think five at the most. It's about my preferred family size too, which is perfect. I could get a full 8 and be largely fine in Sims 2 and 3, but it's a nightmare for me in Sims 4. I have autonomy on, but sometimes it doesn't even feel like it's doing anything. Or maybe I'm just a horrible micromanager.
