I like the third option th most. However there are always pros and cons about how it will be done in game.
TS2 was great as you could play uni or every other household in the neighbourhood. You could choose. However, your Sims were stuck there until they finished or dropped out.
TS3 was more realistic as Sims returned home between semesters. The downside was you could only play that Sim(s) while at university and couldn't switch households (if I remember correctly???).
