This is absolutely how I feel playing without mods. I get so frustrated by the bugs and even worse for the gameplay. There is absolutely nothing that drives any kind of progression. Sims that are mean never do mean interactions. They are nice and they get along with everyone. Kids do homework autonomously, parents help autonomously. Like...I want some of my kids to fail. I want them to have bad parents, but the game mechanics prevent that.
And with mods is just as hard to balance. I added some to try and give my sims some personality and then everyone was always angry or tense. It's a fine line and I'm still trying to tweak things to get it to a balanced state instead of just one sided.
If TS4 is going to be the main game for years to come, I hope they fix the traits, rebalance emotions, and add new personality features like attractions and/or interests. Plus the world is so limited, we need more lots, more neighborhoods, and more space. For those of us with 7 years worth of sims, we're out of room. Some of my sims had to be put in the out of world pool because there aren't any houses left for them to move into. And that sucks because I can't play them until someone else dies and they take their house. It's ridiculous. TS4 is the most limited game in the series.
I wouldn't say it was the most limited in the series - I used to run out of room for my sims all the time in TS3 as you are restricted to playing in one world only, which means you also have to fit in every single type of community lot you need just in that one world.
But, yes, the game is far too happy happy happy.
I get along with this fine for the main part, but some of my sims are meant to be bad parents, bad children, bad teens, evil and mean etc and I do not want them being nice when my back is turned.
The thing I wish they had never implemented in this game is emotions. I don't need to be told my sim is sad, I want to be able to tell that myself by looking at their face, their posture, their behaviour.
I don't want nice decor making them happy. Yes, a trashy undecorated home could make them a bit miserable but nice decor should just make them fine, as most sims have nice decor anyway which makes a happy buff too much.
I am sure it is a very difficult thing to get tuned just right, especially since us players all have differing views and opinions. But let's hope they keep working on and updating these things. The trait updates and likes/dislikes is a great start.
I think in TS3 I never ran out of space because we had CAW. Once they released that, I made my own world and expanded it with each new pack and even for the store content. I never felt like I was out of room. I just kept going. It's probably got something to do with my playstyle since I like smaller houses. Even my mansions are on small 30x30 plots instead of the huge 64x64. I think part of my problem with TS4 is that the lots are huge to me. On a 20x15 lot, I can make 2 houses with 2-4 bedrooms each. And the huge lots are reserved for things like town squares and whole neighborhoods with lots of retail or cafes or gyms. I'd rather have a bunch of smaller lots.
I agree about the emotions, but it's a popular feature. On the Paralives patreon I suggested not having moodlets and people flipped out. I really think you shouldn't have to read about what's happening. To me that's so lazy for a game that's supposed to be visual. In sims 2 you don't have to read about their emotional state, you can see it very clearly. In TS4 you can see it very clearly. I don't understand why we need to read about it, too. That's one of the dumbest features.
