i don't think your fear is weird or to be ashamed of in any way. in fact, when i was a kid, i was afraid of two things: grim reaper and burglar. grim reaper looked scary, while burglar was nothing special, but you never knew when he would appear and that scary/intense music made the whole situation terrifying (especially in ts1 - oh god, i hated those sound effects). so i learned to be prepared to witness the grim reaper when my sim was about to die so i wasn't shocked. i also turned the sound down. after some time i got used to him, he wasn't that scary anymore; his animations and some dialogues are actually pretty funny (especially in ts2) so i kinda didn't mind him. i also played the sims 2 and 3 a lot with my friend and he liked to kill off his sims (when he was younger at least) so it was natural that i'd witness the grim reaper often. besides i didn't want to look like a coward in front of him, so i got used to it haha.
as for the burglar, i turned the volume down every in-game night and zoomed the camera out, so i had control over the whole lot. and after some time i kinda "lost my fear" of getting burgled too. :)
if you could tell us, what you find scary about grim reaper (as the poster above me suggested), we could give you more suggestions on how to cope with him. :)
