I will buy this pack, I think. It all depends on what I see later today. However, I have some concerns.
I don't find a hotel management system appealing. Yet, I am disappointed that there may not be hotels and resorts in this expansion. Although I do not enjoy the management, I do enjoy having the option to stay in hotels.
To my knowledge, that feature has been present in every tropical Sim pack to date. Now, it's possible that that feature is not included? I hope that's not true.
These are the arguments in favor of excluding hotels:
- A resort system means that something else will be cut out of the game
- Hotels can only exist in vacation worlds.
However, neither supposition is true.
For example, in TS3, it was possible to have water sports in any coastal world. There was swimming, snorkeling, houseboats, sailboats, rowboats, paddle boats, water skiing, wind sailing, and jet skis. I believe that EP also came with pool slides, floats, poolside waterfalls, a swim-up pool bar, and a stilt foundation that allowed buildings to be built over the water. There were also mermaids, a lifeguard career, new reward traits, and lifetime wishes. Also, if you had the patience to place a lot, scuba diving was possible in any world.
All of that was possible and more. All, in addition to a hotel management system. Not only that, but hotels could exist in any world.
In short, previous packs didn't require compromise. They were always chock full.
From what I can tell, this pack offers base game material for a fee. (Lounge chairs, I'm looking at you!) In addition, an existing problem is a feature now? Cleaning up after filthy Sims was already a problem in City Living. Sims in that EP leave coffee cups, cupcakes, and dirty plates all over the place! I suspect that EA couldn't fix that problem. So now, it has been baked into the gameplay?
I'm not too enthusiastic about that. If that's EA's idea of a concession to eco-living, I could have suggested features that would have fit that theme so much better. Anything else would have been more appealing than cleaning a beach, to be honest.
In any case, I'll wait to see what EA has to say later today. Hopefully, there is more to this expansion.
Cleaning a beach is something that us, people that live in the beach, do frequently. Unfortunately though. But it became part of our lives.
True. However, as a game feature, it's not the least bit appealing to me. It seems as if EA used something that was already an issue within the game and decided to call it a feature.

What? Of course that is true. There is always a compromise. Resources are not infinite. Anytime something is added it means something else wont be added.
We might not know what was compromised on in TS3 because we only see the final product, but no matter how much stuff is in any game (regardless of what series its from) there is always compromises. There are always features that will be overlooked or skipped in favor of other features
Thats why I dont understand the mindset that hotels are simply being left out. Its not that theyre being left out its more like the resources that would have went into them have gone elsewhere. What im waiting to see is where theyve gone.
I guess that I see it differently. I can't compromise on something that I never knew existed. I do know that hotels have existed in each tropical expansion.
To put it another way, each version of the series has usually built on what came before. TS4 is more about taking away. In each themed TS4 EP, there is usually something that has been taken away that has traditionally been available.
A lot of people are fine with this, or okay with paying more to get it in another pack. I don't happen to be one of those people, that's all. I'm not a fan of the way that TS4 themes have been stretched across multiple add-ons. For example, TS4 will start its sixth year this September. It's taken nearly that long to get lounge chairs and we're still waiting on things like ceiling tiles, spiral stairs/ladders, stair landings, etc.

I dont care if you buy the pack or not. But most of the stuff you mentioned is also included in this pack. Mermaids, Sunburn, Jet Skis, boats, Ocean Swimming, Diving/Snorkeling. Lifeguards and there will be so many new build buy objects. Plus things i cant recall right now.
99 percent of the responses ive seen on twitter and small over social media has been overjoyed and happy. Because Island living looks like a great pack @Cynna
I'm excited about the pack, too. I've wanted a pack about beach activities from the very beginning. Some of the stuff that I mentioned will be making a comeback. Some of it won't.
I don't really care about build and buy stuff nearly as much as I care about actual systems. Systems are much harder for the average player to recreate.
I'm curious to see what new systems there will be in this expansion. Hopefully, I'm wrong and hotel systems will return to the series in this pack. I have no idea. ::crossed fingers::
