I'm a family player as well and would not want to play without this pack again. I love milestones, compatibility and characteristic preferences. I also like the addition of midlife-crisis and work rivals. I love what the pack adds to infant gameplay and looks.
I tweaked some things with mods, but there's nothing in this pack that absolutely requires you to use mods to make it enjoyable.
I'd say if you are okay with it basically being Base Game .02, go for it.
Both CAS and BB are really nice imo.
I'm not the biggest fan of the world that comes with the pack, though.
