Is it just me OR are the sims just terrible parents on their own?

I am playing the Dimmsdale family Arthur and Hester Dimmsdale and their two children, a toddler named Pearl and a baby named Arthur Jr.  I'm just letting them run themselves, and all they want to...

I do have a good live-in nanny in one of my saves. She appeared when I had LittleMsSam's Live-in Service mod installed, and I made sure she had appropriate traits for childcare work. She's the best nanny I've had so far.
