Is it just me OR are the sims just terrible parents on their own?

I am playing the Dimmsdale family Arthur and Hester Dimmsdale and their two children, a toddler named Pearl and a baby named Arthur Jr.  I'm just letting them run themselves, and all they want to...

Sims are definitely terrible parents-though sometimes they'll surprise you! 

I once had a terrible nanny in the game that looked a lot like my boyfriend's best friend. (He's super nice irl.) He kept yelling at my sims' toddler, so he had to go. Turns out he was mean.
