Is It Okay to Mix Past Tense With Present Tense in Story Writing?

It reads just fine. I thought you meant having past tense and present tense in the same sentence --- Now that would be a no-no.  Works just fine the way you've got it. šŸ˜

That's not how it works. One can't switch back and forth willy-nilly just because of multiple sentences.
