Older games used to have the kind of fun double entendres that would go straight over the heads of the kiddies and leave the adults collapsed with laughter. The same kind that have been found in kiddie cartoons for a very long time now. There used to be a level of intellligence to it that really packed a punch and left you dying to do more because it was so much silly irreverent fun.
Now the intelligence is gone too, that sense of naughty eye winking mischief that used to feel like an adventure all on its own. There's no brains to be found anywhere, and the game fails and disappoints on every possible level there is.
It leaves the player with nothing to look at, nothing to enjoy, nothing to build up, create, anticipate, or enact. It was a valid and rich layer of gameplay, and it's been thrown out on its ear like pretty much everything else. Replaced with drinking water and playing with cellphones, which is definitely not intelligent and the complete opposite of riveting.
Yes, exactly. This is so well said.
