Is there any way to stop kleptomaniacs stealing from your retail store?

Now that I think about it, what's up with random calls from NPC's saying, "Hey, I hear you're a thief. I don't want you coming to my place anymore."

It's odd. 'Cause I'd never been to their place in the first place. I've never tried to develop a klepto character and have never tried to steal anything. I wonder if there's a correlation between that occurrence and the stealing of items from my store. Kind of like being victimized and libeled by the thief.
