They may have refined it @kremesch73 but basically two bottles of medicine, a few glasses of OJ and sims get better. if you don't treat it it will spread throughout a family and if they have other sim visitors they can catch it too.
It's actually a real pain when it is your own sims that are sick that you play in rotations (but currently are rotated away from) as they will not get better autonomously and so will keep spreading the illness around. hence the 'epidemic'.
Considering I can't access the hospital from GTW I'd prefer it if there were no illnesses, they are shallow annoy game-play imo.
