Well this confirms that moving solely to 64-bit means nothing. They have no intention of actually using that advantage to its potential for future packs so why bother taking away 32-bit in the first place?
Actually it means everything if you think about the fact that most updates are already only in 64 bit for 64 bit machines so even now people won't be able to update their video cards or their motherboards or processors - even many anti-virus makers are not putting out 32 bit updates anymore so new virus problems and machine will have little to no protection. Video card updates control more than just the video of your game - they also make some fixes for games that 32 bit players can no longer get. Both Nvidia and Radeon stopped updates for 32 bits already. Also apple players also need updates they can't get soon as well. EA is like one of last places going 64 bit - so be glad your game of choice was with EA or you'd already had problems if you only ran 32 bit.
I remember when we went from 8 bit to 16 bit - they did not give notices back then and all the equipment and game companies just updated leaving player all flapping in the wind with nothing to help us play our games at all. The same thing happened when we went from 16 bit to 32 bit. It was brutal - no warnings at all and I had a half dozen games I had just bought my kids and not a one of my pcs back then would play the darn things. So companies giving notice never mind giving a legacy version of the game so people could still play if a courtesy we did not get in the past. Also once your bought a game it was your - no money back - in those days even on unopened packages.
Ouch. It's a good thing 64-bit platforms at least added 32-bit backward compatibility, but then again, at that point the market for 32-bit software was already huge, so making 64-bit machines exclusively support 64-bit apps would've disrupted a lot of things ?
