I don't now what the exact space requirement is, but 8 tiles is enough to keep my household sims from going over to the flower beds when I select "harvest all".
Thanks for the heads up. Might have been some weird "bug" in my game, since my sim went from a garden plot to a single apple tree half across the lot which is 50x40 in size :o Will have to try it out some day :)
