@SimmerGeorge I don't think a bunch of updated hairstyles and a few eye-presets are that much compared to the other updates they've implemented around the same time. I mean, when you look at the previous years, except for the handful of 'big' updates, there were years where we only got a bunch of Christmas stuff, or three chairs and a t-shirt. I mean, even the 20th anniversary was a recycled item with a decoration snapped on top.
Which, yeah, I too feel they underdeliver sometimes. Especially when you look at the annual profit that's being made by this game, but that's a separate issue. In this thread it's about whether there's too much focus on representation and playing as your simself. Which I would agree with, if that representation were at the cost of other updates. However, my conclusion is that, that's not the case. The game is just lacking in general, it was lacking when it was shipped. And representation, especially for POC was severely lacking, too. Up to a point where it was even a little insulting. Glitchy skin tones, vegetable hair, those things are not okay.
We can argue whether the gender update was necessary, which is the only BIG update they did for the LGBTQ+ community. I thought it was cool, but Cinebar doesn't like it. So, I guess that's just a matter of perspective. Besides that, they only added a bunch of flags and recolored some tights and a shirt.
I do agree with @Cinebar though, that there's way too much focus on visual aesthetics and not enough on gameplay. But I don't think representation is to blame. That's a general problem with the game that's existed since 2014.
I mean, just look at the kits that came out. All the BB/CAS items look lovely, but the only one that offers actual gameplay was a buggy mess at release and still lacks proper pack integration. I think THAT is a more serious problem than the fact they're updating a bunch of hairstyles or are thinking about implementing pronouns.
