I didn't buy SPs during Sims 2, but I got some for Sims 3 (including Katy Perry, yes, lol). I also bought from sims 3 store whenever I could afford it.
I think I'm buying more SPs for ts4 because of what you said, and also because of the lack of a store.
I may be part of the problem, but I liked buying SPs, and if I like something, then I buy it. Simple enough for me. *shrugs* (I'm not going to be guilt-tripped about buying stuff I like.)
Now, if they sell Pets into separate packs (like a dog pack, a cat pack, etc), then I would be much more cautious in my purchases. That kind of move would just be going too far for me...
Meanwhile, I'm waiting for a Generations or Seasons EP! :smiley:
