Never go to a birthday party if you got invited

My active sim got a birthday party invite from his bff, someone he had planned to become romantic with and eventually marry, born-in-game sim...I had this all planned out.

The oven decided it was time to break so there was no birthday cake, but she aged up anyway. Then the next day he got another birthday party invite from the same chick, this one he declined. It would have made her an elder...not so happy about this aspect of the game. I wish they hadn't included it to begin with. :/
