Hmm, they sorta warned us, but not really. The patch note phrase '“ready to age up, but not yet aged up” friends' made it sound like it would only happen if they're ready, ie close to age up.
I do have aging off. I received three BD invites for one Sim in one or two days. I went the first time, but if I had gone the other two, she would be an elder. I'm with the folks who think birthdays should be removed from the autonomous invitation feature. I like the autonomous dinner parties, and I can always throw a party and age up non household Sims if I need to.
It's good this thread was made so that players stop to think about whether we want to accept the invite or not.
