Hiya, can i ask how you set up Spooky Day for the trick or treat to work? What world / lot do you play? Where do you position the bowl? What time do the kids come to the house? Ive googled this many times and Like most players it's just never worked! You're the first person who has said its always worked!
Kids and teens knock on the door in costumes with the Trick or Treat tradition. You can then treat or trick them as a social interaction. If you have the candy bowl, they just take candy from that instead and won't knock (so you might miss them). So the candy bowl is for a hands-off approach. Candy bowl is also used during Spooky Party, and there is an interaction to ask people for treats (maybe tricks too?) during the party, but haven't checked if this satisfies the tradition or not.
