I can tell you that I did update Origin today, and am not experiencing the issues you describe. So there's hope. :)
I'm glad you didn't, and hope that a game repair does the trick. Backed up my saves and as a bonus, found my old saves, after I had adopted a stoic attitude over their loss. Now they feel like baggage :D But hoping the repair works. Deeply appreciate the advice and feedback you and others gave here, though. Reporting things to EA's website often feels like hollering down a well and hoping for an echo.
