I'm disappointed with this too. Everything they add to this system is going to be "unemployed". If it's not a career, then it's a hobby that makes money on the side. Vet as a hobby? Retail as a hobby? Who purchases, manages and runs a bakery as a hobby?
I made some suggestions for Self-Employment over in the Ideas forum a while ago: Create A Job Tool. The idea would let the sim who rings up to purchase the building the "owner and manager" of the venue (retail, restaurants, vet and whatever else they add), while still allowing all members of the family to work at the venue.
School kids already have two lines of code set up to show what they do under their career, School AND if they have a part time job, it shows that too. Sims who own Retail AND have a full time job should show BOTH under their job descriptions - just like the kids get. I have a Celebrity Chef who also owns a Bakery. I would like to see his business owner in his description somewhere too.
I suppose they see it as a very small thing - that word unemployed - but it really puts a damper on me using these systems as a career, cause they're not seen that way by the game. My sims work their little butts off away from home and they still get that "unemployed" tag attached to them which gives them inappropriate whims and moodlets. The game thinks they're unemployed, but we don't!
Bring on Self-Employment! Preferably in a way that lets us choose what they do, when they do it, and how. Full time, part time, crafting, services and tuition, (like in my link above).
