It depends a lot on the language, in Italian (which has a very close grammar to French) they were able to find the word "coniuge" which works for all genders. It's all up to the individual grammars anyway, but it's nice to see that (for once) they were able to find and use a neutral term also in a very gendered language like ours.
"coniuge" = "conjoint" , yes it's one of the translations of "spouse" .
Doesn't the French "conjoint" become "conjointe" in the feminine form, or is it just when it's an adjective? I'm not sure, I always get lost in these things in French... Anyway, if that was an option, it's indeed unfortunate they didn't choose it!
