Platforms versus foundations

I am trying to decide whether to use a foundation or platforms in a build I am about to start. Does anyone know of any advantages a foundation has over a plaform, *other than* a foundation can make up for uneven terrain without flattening it?
  • You can raise or lower foundation in the same step for the whole house. With platforms, you will need to adjust them individually for each room.
  • if you use platform all around you can use wall height 2 or 3 and still make it look wall height 1 this makes it so you can use roof trims that for some very annoying reason are only available to wall height 2 upwards

also with platforms you can make huge "staircases" which you can't if you add foundations

as for cons you can't make pools through platforms and you get limited selection on wallpapers because plaform goes over them

also might struggle with wallpapers for exterior with the platform look

as for pros of foundation well you don't have the wallpaper struggle you can build pools through them and its also much simpler to build cause you don't have to fiddle with platforms and whatnot

oh and i don't think we can place ladders through platforms but i might be mistaken

aand if you did want tall walls and foundation the platform would make wall height appear shorter
  • I think it depends on the structure. If you build a room on a raised platform the walls will remain at ground level with the interior flooring still raised to the height of the platform. This can make placing doors/windows tricky and you’ll have to build additional platforms to act as a staircase. Whereas a foundation will raise the ground level of the room. ETA: You don’t necessarily need to add a series of platforms you could add an exterior one as the landing for a staircase, but it will ultimately eat up exterior wall space regardless which option you choose.

A pro to platforms is that they can be connected at varying heights, which is something that can’t be done with foundations. A con is that they cannot be connected to foundations in the same way different height foundations can’t connect.

From my own use of platforms I will only use them in outdoor structures that don’t require walls. If your structure is walled you would be better off using a foundation since the room elevation in conjunction with the ground won’t change with platforms.

Platforms also do not allow pools. This was said above but just to reiterate it. I find platforms best used in conjunction with foundations as a way to raise/lower the interior sections of the build while the exterior is raised with the foundation tool.
  • I just did another build of my favorite house. I had a moment of inspiration on just how I could add the stairs behind a door for the maid's entrance. I was successful, but later on, I decided I liked the look of the Winder staircase better. Also, I wanted to make the house a shade larger. What I found I had to do, despite using foundations to raise the entire house at once, was upon downloading it again, some of the floor levels dropped! Don't ask me how, I'm totally baffled by it. I spend a great deal of time going around the main floor fixing this little mess! Eventually, I think, I got every room on the same level. I did, however, allow the sun room off the back of the house to be one step lower, (no need for stairs). I also let the office off of the diningroom be a couple of steps lower. But what a pain in my assets that was!
