Yesterday I had to do a bedroom and there was only one bedroom so I didn't have to choose.
They liked basic decor, hated green and liked programming.
I build a nice bedroom with a desk and computer in basic decor, made sure I didn't use green, stayed under budget and they hated it.
No pay and reputation loss.
You have to remember that the gig preferences are a mix of everyone in the household, but they don't tell you everything. If you spend the time to learn everyone's Likes/Dislikes as individual you might discover why they hated it.
