I know that buildings and sims are stored in the tray. If you were to down laod a building from, say, Mod The Sims, you'd drop it into your tray folder and it should appear in your Library.
I also saw a thread where someone figured out to find individual sims in tray using Tray Importer. If I can find the thread I'll link it here.
It's probably best to take the whole folder when you're replacing. I think blueprint files are buildings.
