You can become famous no matter what career you're in.
You can also become famous if you can afford to donate to charities frequently. After you reach two or three stars (I forget which), you can literally become a five-star celebrity from there just be donating artifacts to museums, and some items like easels to fans. I have a forest of money trees (if you put one in bloom into your household inventory, the seeds separate and can be planted from there. I have now maxed my money supply at 9,999,999, and it never changes...)
I have one very wealthy sim whose job description is "Celebutante," like Kim Kardashian; literally famous for being famous.
